Vintage Party Dress for 18" American Girl-type Dolls


Vintage Party Dress
For AG or 18” Doll

Hook: H/5.00 crochet hook
Yarn: DK weight, 2 skeins Plymouth Dream Baby, Color 107, (183 yards) or similar
Button (3.1 oz.)
¾” white grosgrain ribbon (18” for waist and 8” for headband

Stitches used: single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, loop stitch
Made in one piece, no sewing necessary

Foundation Row: Ch 22.

Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. (20 hdc) Ch 1, turn.

Row 2:sc in ea hdc; work 3 chs to make button loop. (20 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: hdc in first hdc, *2hdc in next, 1hdc in next* repeat to last st.,2  hdc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (30 hdc)

Row 4: sc across (30 sc) Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: hdc in 4, ch 2, hdc in 7, ch 2, hdc in 8, ch 2, hdc in 7, ch2, hdc in 4. Ch 1, turn.

Row 6: hdc in 4, [2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc] in ch 2 sp, hdc in 7, 2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in 8, 2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in 7, 2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in 4. Ch 1, turn.

Row 7: hdc in 6, [ hdc, ch 1, hdc] in ch 1 sp, hdc in 11, [hdc, ch 1, hdc] in ch 1 sp, hdc in 12, [hdc, ch 1, hdc] in ch 1 sp, hdc in 11, [hdc, ch 1, hdc] in ch 1 sp, hdc in 6. (58 st) Ch 1, turn.

Row 8: hdc in 7, [hdc, ch 1, hdc] in ch 1 sp, sc in next hdc, [ch 3, sk 1, sc in next st], repeat 5 times, [hdc, ch 1, hdc] in ch 1 sp, hdc in 14, hdc, ch 1, hdc in ch 1 sp, sc in next hdc, [ch 3, sk 1, sc in next st] repeat 5 times, [hdc in ch 1 sp, hdc] in ch1 sp, hdc in 7. Ch 1, turn.

Row 9: hdc in next 8 stitches, 4 dc in ch 1 sp, sc in next st, 4 dc in next ch 3 sp, sc in sc space (6 times), 4 dc in ch 1 st of corner, hdc in bodice front sts, 4 dc in ch 1 sp, 4 dc in next ch 3 sp, sc in sc space (6 times), 4 dc in sc of corner stitch, hd in last stitches. Ch 1, turn.

Row 10 (underarm row): hdc in 9, *ch 4, hdc in 3rd dc space in next corner*, hdc across bodice front (18 st), Repeat * to * , hdc to end (10 st). Sl st to connect beg and end stitches.

Waistband Row: ch 4,  sk 2 st, * dc in next st, ch 2, sk 1 st, dc in next st *, * repeat  to * sl st in beg st. (This is where you will weave in the ribbon.) (62 st.)

Note: For the bottom of the nightgown you will work it in the round.

Row 11: Ch 1, sc in every sc around. Sl st in beg stitch (62 st) (do not turn),

Row 12: Ch 1, working in back loops of sts, 1 sc in first st, * ch 7, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, rep from * across row, ending with ch 7, 1 sc in top of tch, turn.

Row 13: Push loops forward. Ch 3. Dc in the two stitches between the loops across the row to the end, sl st to top beg or row.

Row 14: Ch 2, dc in same stitch, * 1 dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next *  repeat * to * around, sl st in top of beg dc. (93 dc).

Row 15: Ch 2, dc in each st around, dc in last st, sl st in beg stitch (93 dc).

Row 16: Repeat Row 12, sl st in beg. Stitch. Ch 2.

Row 17-19: dc in each row, slip stitching in beginning row as in previous dc rows.

Rows 20-27: Repeat Rows 16-19 two times.

Row 28: Repeat Row 12, sl st in beg st, ch 1, turn.

Row 29: sc in beg stitch, repeat Row 12 except do scs around instead of dcs. Finish off and work in ends.

Weave 18” ribbon through dc opening in waist and tie in the front. Trim to desired length.
